The pace of our society today is so fast that we mostly don’t seem to ever have enough time to plan, prepare and eat healthy food. For many of us, this is our usual drill: you find yourself in the middle of your company’s big project, besides there’s so much work on your desk, and your bosses are waiting for your reports… and oh, lunch time is almost over and you are hungry! How do you get a healthful food on your desk? Yeah right! Where’s the brain space for another round of thinking? So lunch time is a puzzle!

Let’s just skip the part of mindless snacking while working (PS: Snacking is really cool IF you Snack Healthy!); and head right out of your office door where if you’re like most people, you’re probably armed with ONLY two options now: grab a quick soft drink OR dash into the nearest food vendor.

First of all, let’s realistically admit that your list of food vendor options is a function of your wallet capacity…

Okay, so the first option of loading up on empty calories with little or no capacity to give you satiety is obviously not recommended. Our focus today is more on the second part: the nearest food vendor. First of all, let’s realistically admit that your list of options is a function of your wallet capacity. Next, is that we also hope you realise that it is economically wallet wise to exclude unhygienic road side food vendors (popularly called ‘mama-put’) to avoid food poisoning.

Of course restaurants foods comes dished on a plate, so there’re no food labels/descriptions of their content and even the packaged ones from most eateries don’t either- leaving us with less nutrition information.

Practical tips on how to eat a healthy lunch!

As a quick tip, here are some basics that should always lead you down to a healthy meal if you rope these few habits into your lifestyle:

  1. Opt for a clean environment. Without mincing words, a descent environment has to be a top priority when making your choice of a food vendor. This point cannot be over-emphasized.
  2. Not just eating vegetables, but eating it the right way. It turns out that more often than not, the use of vegetables like carrots, green beans or peas, etc are more for their decorative purposes rather than to provide the necessary nutrients. The implication: over-cooked and scanty sprinkles of the vegetables. So let’s just be plain honest here: if you want to eat get a good dose of vegetables for your purchased lunch pack, opt for vegetable soups instead there you have much better luck of actually eating the vegetables in sufficient amounts.
  3. Make a conscious effort to have a good protein source. Most people still get to use an additional serving of ‘something’ or an ‘xtra’ to make the food look more appetizing. So rather than just an xtra kpomo, eba or rice; replace it with moi moi or even beans. In the same vein, eating meat is not about status so it needs to be present to augment as a good source of protein. In the absence of meat, boiled eggs come in very handy as a suitable replacement.
  4. Going light with fruits should also quench hunger! The trick to gaining true satisfaction from fruits lies in opting for those with as much fibrous content as possible. This is because, they make your stomach feel full fast (easy satiety). Simple Cole-slaws of carrot/cabbage mixtures also makes a good replacement so long as its not drowned in overly salted salad cream or extra-sweetened sugar syrups. Also, chewy fruits & nuts have a way of making you feel full fast, plus their added benefits of being stripped of fats.
  5. You are more likely to fail if #HealthyEating isn’t a lifestyle. Truth is, #HealthyEating almost sounds like a chore to many people. And the reasons differ for many people ranging from failed weight loss attempts to the perceived cost implications or just no time. So here is the bottom-line: #HealthyEating absolutely needs to become your lifestyle, and the more fun you make it, the more it becomes likely to become a part of your daily routine.
