What is Intracerebral hemorrhage?

An Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH), also called IntraParenchymal Hemorrhage, occurs when a damaged blood vessel bursts and bleeds into the brain tissue itself. Within minutes, the brain cells begin to die. The sudden raised pressure within the brain causes further damage to other surrounding brain cells quickly leading to unconsciousness or death. The most common cause of Intracranial Hemorrhage is uncontrolled High Blood Pressure (Hypertension).

Unfortunately, the sad news with Hypertension/High blood pressure is that it typically does NOT show symptoms; when there are any symptoms due to hypertension; it’s often an associated complication hence the code name: Silent-Killer.

Intracerebral Hemorrhage is responsible for being the 2nd most common type of STROKE. In particular, the risk of having an intracerebral hemorrhage is increased with Anticoagulant medications, arteriovenous malformations (congenital abnormalities in blood vessels), bleeding into a brain tumour and the use of recreational drugs e.g. cocaine and amphetamine.
