Reaching out within the Neighbourhood- Ilupeju Titun Community health screening

Ilupeju Titun community health outreach

On the 23rd of February 2013, residents of Ilupeju Titun Community Developmental Area in Lagos State witnessed a community health outreach program organized by Mission5000plus. The theme of the event was 1.3 by 13, begins with you. Mission5000plus is a Non-Governmental Organization focused on healthcare, human capacity development, income generation and poverty alleviation. The healthcare arm of the organization hosted this event in order to enable the community access certain basic medical Information, care and tests.

Ilupeju Titun is a small community of people in Jibowu U-turn area of Ifako-Ijaiye Local government Area, Lagos State. According to Mr Sunday Oyesina, who is the Community’s Development Association (CDA) Secretary, “this event is the first major health outreach held in this community; what we typically have here is a door to door type of outreach from different organizations and Government agencies, particularly those giving out immunization vaccines”.

According to Treasures Uchegbu, the founder of Mission5000plus: The Lagos State Aids Control Agency (LSACA) has a target to conduct HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT) on 1.3 million individuals within the state by 2013 (“1.3 by 13”). Mission5000plus is simply taking 1% out of the 1.3 million target and we intend to focus on people within our NGO’s CDA, Ilupeju Titun, Ifako Ijaiye Local Government and environs. This is what inspired this event. In addition, we appreciate the help of our speakers Mrs Taiwo E. Modupe (a health educator and AIDS Action Manager at Ifako Ijayi LGA) and Mrs Toyin Ajayi from Tender Care Initiative who added heath extras like short talks on personal care, family planning exercising and healthy living. Free medical checkups were organized for the attendants such as HIV Counseling and Testing, Vital Signs, weight checks, and Malaria test while the Blood Sugar test, blood pressure checks and de-worming of children cost just a token. Freebies such as condoms (both male and female designs) and drugs like NatureVit (Vit C) and Protobex syrup (a protein supplement) were distributed at the event.

The official partners for the event were: LSACA, Centaur Pharm. Limited, Women and Children Aids and HIV positive Support Foundation (WOCAHSUF), and Jenarius Peter healthcare initiative. The total number of registered attendees at the outreach was 177, most of whom were women and children.
