Event Description: According to the latest WHO world health statistics, as many as 1 in 3 adults all over the world have hypertension (high blood pressure). The situation is much worse in Africa where about 40-50% of people with hypertension are not even aware that they have it! Living with high blood pressure is a present reality for many people in our environment where it is commonplace to have at least one parent or a family member on daily medications or even untimely deaths from strokes and heart diseases because of high blood pressure. High blood pressure does NOT usually show symptoms; when there are any symptoms due to hypertension it’s actually an associated complication hence the code name: ‘Silent-Killer’. There is no known cure for hypertension yet and indeed its causes are multi-factorial but at least, it is manageable with proper diet and low cost medications.
